The end of my last journey has led me to where I am
today. It seems that the key to staying
on track in the classroom lies within the unit plans. These were very easy to find because my
school has been in the process of updating unit plans and curriculum since the
start of school. With QSAC coming
sometime in January, administration has given each department release to either
update or revise unit plans and curriculum.
Because the unit plans are included in the curriculum, both needed to be
updated and revised. I discovered at the
beginning of these revisions that my department, the science department, was
going to be given six different sessions to update and rewrite curriculum due
to the adoption of the new Next Generation Science Standards. At the first meeting on September 21st,
I realized that because my district does not have subject specific supervisors,
administration had to bring in a science supervisor from another district to
help us integrate the new science standards into our curriculums and unit
plans. From reviewing and adjusting the
different science unit plans, it was clear that the unit plans came from the
textbooks being used in the classrooms.
I am in a bit of a different situation since my STEM class is brand new
in the high school. The curriculum
advisor and science supervisor from another district have been guiding me in
creating my unit plans and curriculum from scratch. It is still a work in progress but has been
such a huge learning experience for me and is helping me to see what needs to
go into unit plans and a curriculum.

Interesting information. Was it awkward to work with a supervisor from another district?
