Captain's Log Day 3 “Stay the Course of Study”

Thursday October 13, 2016 Approximately 1430 Hours

After learning how unit plans shape lesson plans, I needed to keep going up the ladder and find out the next level.  In Keansburg the next level is called the adopted curriculum in the classroom.  Also known as the course of study, the adopted curriculum is developed in order for more specific units and objectives to be created.  I talked with my assistant principal to get an idea of what processes need to occur in order for an adopted curriculum to be created and approved since I am in the process of creating my own.  He stated that after the curriculum is complete with unit plans and a “pacing guide” for a certain class in the High School, this is then presented by administration to the curriculum committee of the board of education.  It is then put on the agenda for approval.  After looking through some of the older ones that we had, I could not agree more with the districts decision to give each department time to update and revise the curriculum.  Many of the older adopted curriculums still contained some old textbooks, materials, technology, and even old standards.  The science department’s curriculum, like I said before, still contained the old Common Cores Science standards.  They are all accessible on the main website for the district but will soon be replaced with the curriculum that is currently being refined.

Signing off from the USS Keansburg,

Captain Lorusso
